Kate Q and A The Guru Stories

Was the Guru really all that poor growing up?

No, she was not. That was made up for the movies.

Did she really see a friend die before her eyes?

No, that was from a movie.

When she was in LA once, did she really fend off attackers?

Not likely. She just freaked out and yelled.

Was it her husband who was actually well off?

Yes, he was pretty well off. She owes the origins of the cult to him.

When she was a child, did she really cleverly dump tea onto her suitors to show them?

No, she was a klutz and the story was made up to make her look good.

Where did she get Frog and Scorpion?

American folk fables.

Where did she get the caterpillar and cocoon opened too early story?

A popular TV show at the time called Kung Fu.

Did she work at a Howard Johnson in Vermont?

Maybe, but she exaggerates this because it was a very, very brief time. No change HJ remembers her.

Did she go from rags to riches?

No, she went from upper middle class socialite's daughter in Vermont to riches via the influence of her younger sibling and her relatives, who had money, and a restaurant.

Was she lost during the war and hid behind some doors?

Maybe, but more likely she was abandoned, and went to look for her parents. This also bears a striking similarity to a then popular film where not only does this happen to a little Asian girl, but that she also sees someone die.

What is the name of her Master who taught her Ki energy?

Her Uncle was named Kim. He taught her. Not so dramatic.

So, where did the ki energy come from?

Chi is a common threat in martial arts movies of the 60s and 70s and she merely cribbed it.

Was she a barmaid on an airbase in Korea?

Yes, she was, but not a stripper. She worked as a hostess and that is where she met her husband.

Was her English really that bad if she sold cars in Vermont?

Her English is actually pretty good when she's not mugging for the camera. Yes, she sold cars.

Did she had a kink for watching violent movies? Seems you guys went to a few of them?

Yes. She took the students to some horror and some violent movies, usually as a lesson, which she usually got wrong.

She loved the Joy Luck Club, but did anything in that really happen to her?

No. She did not have any of that happen. She would get into films and think she was in them.

Was the cult involved in a pyramid sales scam in the 1990s involving vitamins, hair products, cable TV, or real estate?

All of the above. The most infamous of this is In Design Nutritionals.

Was her first book a best seller and what are the actual stats?

The Seven Steps to Inner Power was not an international best seller at all. Her 1990s book made approximately 2,400 in sales, mostly copies sold to students and their friends. The 'best seller' tag seems to come from a local bookstore in the San Jose area, not from any major publishing paper. It was a best seller at the book store. That's it.

Did her two TV shows, Morning Planet and the other, ever air anywhere?

Public access and YouTube.

Is it true that her school and the Ernie Reyes school collaborated on a film?

Yes, Three Ninjas. Some of the students are in the film as unpaid, unaccredited background extras.

What is I Smell a Lemon really from?

Saturday Night Live circa 1987. She wasn't very original. She changed it into a master story, but it was just a joke.

Where did Look and Die come from?

Comedies in the 1980s, and also from Fame, a drama movie musical. She thought she thought of it. Nope. I'll give her credit for flubbing the line to make it her own. In the song it's 'People will see me and die', or in the other, 'Look at me and die'. from the comedies, which is closer.

How rich really is she?

Now, probably worth a few million. Not much more though.

Is most of that jewelry from the videos fake?

A lot of it is. She loved the costume stuff.

Did she really get a Stevie award before it even existed? How did she get a Susan Anthony? The same question for any award?

Easy answer, she paid people to give her awards. As for the Stevie, I cannot explain that other than someone messed up. It was some other lady in the 90s.

Did she really marry and then angrily divorce one of her students in the mid 2000s over an affair and try to sue him?

Yes, she did. Ironically he never posted on the web sites about it. The exes however did. A lot.
